Switch to a Bar of Soap instead of buying a liquid hand wash!
I was using an anti-bacterial liquid soap as I have 4 animals, but after doing some research I found out that this is no more effective than a bar of soap! Antibacterial soaps are no more effective than regular soap and water for killing disease-causing germs, according to the CDC.
A test has been done that shows liquid soaps leave a 25% larger carbon footprint than bar soaps! Because of the chemical formula of soap and its ingredients, it takes more chemical feedstocks and processing to manufacture liquid soap. In fact, it takes about 7 times more than when manufacturing hand bar soap. That means 7 times more energy use and carbon emissions!
Switch to a Shampoo Bar Soap instead of plastic bottles!
I am using Suma Rose & Geranium Shampoo Bar 95g, which smells divine! I bought this from a Fairtrade shop near where I live for about £3.
Not only are these much better for the environment as we don’t need to buy any more plastic bottles, but they are also travel-friendly and longer-lasting than liquid shampoo!
They are also said to be able to get your hair back to its original, shiny, state by clearing away residue left from the chemicals found in traditional hair cleansers.
How? Because many shampoo bars don’t include some of the additives used in commercial shampoos, such as sodium lauryl sulfate and ammonium lauryl sulfate. For some people, conditioner isn’t even needed after their hair adjusts in a couple washings with a bar.
Stop buying Cling Film
Cling film cannot be recycled in most collections. Use foil instead, which is recyclable or reusable plastic boxes.
Give up bottled water!
Not only does it come in a plastic bottle, but tremendous resources are used to extract, bottle, and ship it. And many brands of bottled water are simply filtered tap water.
Buy a reusable stainless steel bottle – This is the one I purchased
Buy a carbon filter instead of the plastic ones for use at home. I use Black + Blum
Switch to a Bamboo Toothbrush
In the USA alone, 1bn plastic toothbrushes are thrown out each year!! A bamboo toothbrush can biodegrade back into the soil in about 6 months, so this is a much better alternative to plastic when you need to replace your brush.
Switch to Raw Pet Food!
I have 2 cats and 2 dogs and I have been feeding them all on raw food for the last 4 years.
Pet food from the supermarket comes in either BPA-lined cans that come shrink-wrapped in plastic or dry pet food in bags lined with plastic. Not only is that bad for the environment, it is also not great for the health of your pet.
The main ingredient in most kibbles is grain. It is cheap, stable and available en-mass. It is also completely inappropriate to feed to dogs. Wet and dry synthetic food must be heated to 90 degrees by law, which destroys all nutrients.
Reduced to a sludge, this gloop is compressed and dried into little shapes and coloured to appeal to humans. Synthetic vitamins are sprayed on, then preservatives are added to maintain a shelf life of a minimum one year. This is why I switched all my animals to raw!
I buy from a company called Paleo Ridge. All the food comes packed in cardboard and they deliver your order in eco-friendly WoolCool to insulate the delivery boxes. This can be reused or composted. I have re-used it to make a dog bed!
Not only will you be more environmentally friendly, but your animals will also be healthier too! My animals love raw and I have seen a difference in the glossiness of their coats, their overall health and also one of my cats was really lethargic on shop bought pet food and now he is bursting with energy!
Switch to Biodegradable Cotton Buds
Plastic cotton swabs are discarded after seconds of use but live on for years as one of the biggest river and ocean pollutants!
Stop buying Chewing Gum or Switch to Plastic-Free
Did you know almost all chewing gum is made of plastic? When you’re chewing gum, you’re chewing on plastic, which I didn’t know until I started doing research! I don’t really like chewing gum, but this completely put me off and I wanted to make everyone else aware. A few plastic-free chewing gum options do exist, one of which is Glee Chewing Gum, which contains no plastic.
Re-think your Christmas Tree this Year!
Most artificial trees are made from toxic PVC!!
Get a real, sustainably-grown and harvested tree, a live tree that can be planted, or an artificial tree made from natural materials. There are “trees” made from recycled cardboard, wood, or even recycled glass bottles.
